Saira Khan-Torres - Co-Treasurer
- Introduction and Quorum
- Call to Order The meeting was called to order by Carmen at 6:39 PM.
- Quorum
- Quorum met at 6:39 PM.
- Welcome
- Carmen welcomed attendees and introduced the PTA members.
- Purpose
- Carmen explained the meeting's sole purpose was to hold an emergency election to fill the final vacant parent seat on the School Leadership Team (SLT). This vacancy arose after a previously elected member was found to be a grandparent and therefore not a legal parent, as required.
- Voting Eligibility
- Mr. Daliposki clarified that in this election, only parents were eligible to vote; school staff were not permitted to vote.
- Explanation of the SLT
- A parent requested an explanation of the SLT's function.
- Carmen explained the SLT is the School Leadership Team, composed of an equal number of staff and parents (currently 7 staff and 7 parent members).
- The team meets on the third Monday of every month to discuss matters concerning school performance, policies, safety, construction, PTA, afterschool programs, and other aspects affecting the school and students.
- Mr. Daliposki added that a major responsibility of the SLT is writing the Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP), which defines the school's improvement goals.
- He noted that SLT meetings are open to the public unless an emergency executive session is called. Parents wishing to speak or ask questions must notify Ms. Loftus beforehand.
- Emergency Election for SLT Parent Seat
- Carmen opened the floor for nominations for the vacant SLT parent seat.
- Lori McCarthy – Nominated by Saira (Accepted)
- Florina Pirvu - Self-nominated (Accepted)
- Johora Choudhury - Self-nominated (Accepted)
- Candidate Statements
- Each candidate introduced themselves and explained their motivation for running:
- Lori McCarthy: Has a child with special needs in 1st grade. Highlighted her professional experience with ACS in supporting children and families. She expressed a desire to help make informed decisions, particularly concerning special education and budget allocation.
- Johora Choudhury: Has a daughter in 2nd grade. Stated that she is now more available after reducing her full-time work and is eager to become more involved. She is interested in introducing new programs for the students.
- Florina Pirvu: Has a son in 3rd grade. Mentioned she is an immigrant and relatively new to the NYC school system. She believes joining the SLT will help her better understand the school system and bring new ideas inspired by her European background.
- Election Results
- Carmen launched the virtual election poll. The final results were:
- Lori McCarthy 5 votes 42%
- Florina Pirvu 4 votes 33%
- Johora Choudhury 3 votes 25%
- Decision: Lori McCarthy was declared the winner of the Emergency SLT Election. Carmen, Mr. Daliposki, and all attendees congratulated and welcomed her to the team.
- Post-Election Discussion
- A parent asked if the other two nominees, Ms. Pirvu and Ms. Choudhury, could serve as alternates if a staff member requested an additional parent member or if another seat became vacant.
- Mr. Daliposki confirmed that both candidates could absolutely be considered. Because an election was already held, they are now next in line for appointment (in the order of Florina Pirvu, followed by Johora Choudhury) and a new election would not be needed to fill a future vacancy.
- Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 7:13 PM.
